Exercise physiology: exercise prescribed to manage health conditions

Exercise physiology is an allied health profession that uses prescribed exercise to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury and disability, delivered by accredited exercise physiologists. At Adapt in North Sydney, exercise-based rehabilitation is planned by our physiotherapists and carried into supervised sessions through gym-based physiotherapy.

Exercise physiology and physiotherapy compared

Both professions use exercise, but they are trained, regulated and claimed differently, which matters when you choose an appointment. AHPRA registration is one of the clearest differences.

Where exercise-based care is used

Prescribed exercise sits at the centre of rehab for many conditions, from back pain to the months after joint surgery.

Exercise-based rehab, planned by a physiotherapist

At Adapt, your physiotherapist assesses the problem, writes the exercise program and reviews it, while the coaching team supervises sessions on the gym floor between reviews. That keeps prescribed exercise, progressive loading and clinical review in one plan.

Can a physiotherapist prescribe exercise like an exercise physiologist?

Yes. Exercise prescription is part of physiotherapy training and practice, so a physiotherapist can assess, write and progress a program. The professions differ in regulation, hands-on treatment and claiming.

Questions about exercise physiology

Book a physio

What qualifications does an accredited exercise physiologist have?

An accredited exercise physiologist holds a university degree that meets ESSA's standards and is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia. ESSA is the accrediting body for that profession.

Is an exercise physiologist the same as a personal trainer?

No. Exercise physiology is an allied health profession accredited through ESSA. Personal training is a fitness qualification and is not an allied health registration.

Should I see an exercise physiologist or a physio for a new injury?

A physiotherapist assesses and diagnoses new injuries. Exercise physiologists often manage longer-term exercise programs for known conditions. Choose the appointment that matches what you need assessed.

Can I claim exercise physiology and physiotherapy in the same year?

Often, depending on your extras policy and its limits for each service. Check with your fund before you book, because the two services are usually listed as separate extras items.
