Claiming physio and exercise physiology on your health fund

Physiotherapy and exercise physiology are separate items on extras, and your policy decides whether they share a yearly limit. At Adapt, rehab is planned by physiotherapists, so consults are claimed as physiotherapy.

How extras lists physiotherapy and exercise physiology

Privatehealth.gov.au lists physiotherapy and exercise physiology as separate extras services, and your policy sets how their yearly limits work.

What you can claim at Adapt

The team confirms which parts of your plan are claimable before you start.

  • Physiotherapy appointments

Physiotherapy consults may be claimed on extras that include physiotherapy.

  • Supervised gym sessions

Coaches run these from your physio program, and they are not claimable.

  • Your program in the Adapt app

Your program in the app is a training record, so it is not claimable.

  • Strength testing

Strength testing sits outside extras, even when it informs a physiotherapy review.

How to check your own cover

Ask your fund whether extras covers physiotherapy and exercise physiology separately, whether they share a limit, and whether your waiting period is over. Privatehealth.gov.au notes benefits may be a dollar cap, a percentage, or both.

Then book a physio or ask Adapt to confirm the fee. Gym access, the app, supervised sessions and strength testing are not claimable.

Can I claim physiotherapy and exercise physiology in the same year?

Yes, if your extras policy includes both, but they are separate services and your policy decides whether they share a yearly limit or each have their own, including any sub-limit. At Adapt you claim physiotherapy consults only, because rehab is planned by physiotherapists.

What you can claim at Adapt

Supervised gym work sits outside extras

Coaches run supervised sessions from your physiotherapist's program. Those sessions, the app and strength testing sit outside extras, and the same applies after post-surgical rehab and in personal training. Physiotherapy reviews stay claimable.

What should I ask my health fund before I start?

Ask whether physiotherapy and exercise physiology are listed separately, whether they share a limit, whether your waiting period has ended and whether you need a referral. Bring those answers when you book.

Questions about claiming extras

Book a physio

Are physiotherapy and exercise physiology claimed as the same extras item?

No, they are separate extras services, each claimed under its own item. Your policy decides whether they share a yearly limit or use a sub-limit. At Adapt, consults are claimed as physiotherapy.

Can I claim a supervised gym session as exercise physiology?

No. Supervised gym sessions, the program in the Adapt app and strength testing sit outside extras cover. Only physiotherapy appointments may be claimed, depending on your policy, because Adapt rehab consults are with registered physiotherapists and coaches run the floor work from that plan.

Do I need extras cover to book a physio at Adapt?

No. You can book and pay for the appointment yourself, and extras only changes whether some of the fee comes back. Ask your fund what it pays for a physiotherapy consult, then ask Adapt to confirm the current fee before you book.

When does my extras yearly limit reset?

Your fund sets the reset date, so only it can tell you what physiotherapy extras remain and when a new period starts. Check that remaining cover before you book a run of reviews, because Adapt cannot see your policy.

Can I claim physio if I have only just joined a health fund?

Insurers set waiting periods for general treatment, including extras services such as physiotherapy, so a new policy may not pay until that period has finished. Ask your fund whether your waiting period has ended before you count on extras for a visit.

Can I claim gym membership or personal training on extras?

No. Gym access and personal training are training services, so they sit outside extras cover. Physiotherapy appointments remain the claimable part of an Adapt rehab plan, and the fee for those visits is confirmed before you start.
