How to claim physio and exercise physiology on your health fund
Physiotherapy is claimed through general treatment cover, often called extras, and some extras policies include exercise physiology too, sometimes inside the same yearly limit. Each policy sets its own waiting periods, limits and benefit per visit, while gym access, training programs and strength testing are not claimable. At Adapt in North Sydney, you claim each physio appointment with the receipt from your visit, and the fee is confirmed before you book.

What extras cover can pay for
Policies differ, so use this as a guide to what to check on yours.
Physiotherapy
Listed under general treatment cover, with limits set per service, per year or for life by each policy.
Exercise physiology
Included in some extras policies and sometimes counted inside the physiotherapy limit, so check both lines on your policy.
Gym-based rehab
Consults with your physiotherapist can be claimed when they are separate, priced appointments, while supervised gym sessions count as training.
Gym, coaching and testing
Gym access, personal training, classes and strength testing are training services, so they sit outside extras cover.

Waiting periods and yearly limits
Waiting periods for extras are set by each insurer, and privatehealth.gov.au says they generally run from two to six months for items such as physiotherapy. Yearly limits cap what your fund pays in a year, and some policies share one limit across several services. Your policy's Private Health Information Statement, which you can look up on privatehealth.gov.au, lists both.
How benefits and gaps work
privatehealth.gov.au describes two types of health insurance, hospital and general treatment, also called extras, which you can buy separately or as a combined policy.
General treatment cover pays toward eligible extras services only to a limited extent, so you pay whatever remains after the fund benefit. Nearly every extras service also has limits, set per service, per year or for life.
Your Private Health Information Statement lists those limits. Check it, and ask your fund what it pays for a physio visit, before you book.
Planning rehab around your extras limit
If your yearly physio limit is small, tell Sam Baylis or John MacAuliffe at your first appointment, and the plan can show which visits are physio reviews and which work happens between them, including gym-based sessions that sit outside extras.

Questions to ask your health fund
Ask your fund these questions before you book, then we confirm the Adapt fee so you know what you will pay.
Book a physioIs physiotherapy on my extras?
General treatment cover can include physiotherapy, but not every extras policy does. Check your Private Health Information Statement or ask your fund.
How much of my yearly limit is left?
Yearly limits cap what your fund pays in a year. Your fund can tell you the remaining amount before you book.
Have I served the waiting period?
Waiting periods for extras are set by each insurer, and privatehealth.gov.au says they generally run from two to six months for physiotherapy.
Does exercise physiology share the physio limit?
Some extras policies include exercise physiology inside the same yearly limit as physiotherapy. Ask your fund to check both lines.
Do you need a referral before you pay?
You do not need a referral to book a physio at Adapt. If your fund requires one before it pays, get it first and bring it with you.

Claiming with your receipt
You pay at the end of each appointment and get a receipt with the details your fund needs. If the claim is not processed on the spot, submit it through your fund.
Fees and rebatesCan I claim physio on Medicare?
Usually not for a standard appointment. If you have a chronic condition, your GP can create a chronic condition management plan, and Services Australia says eligible patients may get Medicare benefits for some allied health services, including physiotherapy and exercise physiology. Talk to your GP first, then tell us before you book.
Physiotherapy and exercise physiology on extras
Both can appear on extras, but they are different professions and policies do not treat them the same.
| Physiotherapy | Exercise physiology | |
|---|---|---|
| Who provides it | Registered physiotherapist | Accredited exercise physiologist |
| On extras policies | Listed under general treatment | Included in some policies |
| Limits | Set by your policy | Sometimes shared with the physio limit |
| What to check | Yearly limit and waiting period | Whether it is covered and whether it shares the physio limit |
Will I know the fee before I book at Adapt?
Yes. The team confirms the current fee by phone or email before you book, so you know what you will pay. The receipt you get at the end of the appointment is what you claim with if your extras include physio.
Fees and rebatesQuestions about health fund claims
Book a physioDo I need extras cover to see a physio?
No. You can book and pay for a physio appointment without extras cover. Extras only changes how much of the fee comes back from your fund after the visit. Ask us to confirm the fee before you book so you know the amount you will pay on the day.
Is exercise physiology covered by private health insurance?
In some extras policies, yes, and the benefit can sit inside the same yearly limit as physiotherapy. Your Private Health Information Statement on privatehealth.gov.au shows whether exercise physiology is listed and whether it shares that limit. Check both lines with your fund before you book any appointment.
When does my extras limit reset?
It depends on the policy. Some funds reset the yearly extras limit by calendar year and others by membership year, so your fund can confirm the date that applies to you. Ask when you check what is left on the limit.
Can I claim physio straight after joining a health fund?
Usually not. Waiting periods apply when you start extras cover, and privatehealth.gov.au says they generally run from two to six months for items such as physiotherapy. Your fund can tell you the period on your policy and whether you have finished it.
Why might my fund pay a different amount for a follow-up appointment?
Policies can set different benefits for a first consult and later visits, so the rebate can change after your initial appointment. Your fund can tell you both amounts before you book. Ask for the initial and subsequent physio benefits on your extras.
Can I use my health fund for gym membership or personal training?
No. At Adapt, gym membership and personal training are training services, so they sit outside extras cover. Only separate, priced physio appointments may be claimable when your extras include physiotherapy. Supervised gym sessions, classes and strength testing are not claimable.
